Unexpected Home Repair

In the very early hours of August 20, 2017 we were awakened from our sleep due to a storm. The storm had blown open our balcony door, which hadn't been latched all the way.

We were heading back to bed when we heard a loud boom and I felt the floor shake. I rushed to the window and saw that our house, which we hadn't even owned for two full weeks, had been hit by a tree limb!

I say tree limb but I think you can see from the pictures, the tree limb is the size of a tree itself. These were pictures taken later in the morning while trying to find a tree service to come out on a Sunday.

This is the view out our front door. Thankfully we have two other exit doors that weren't completely blocked.  It smelled like Christmas inside the house...but it sure didn't feel like a Christmas gift.

It was our neighbor's tree that fell on our house. And while we were getting a bid from a company that was clearly planning to gouge us because they could, she offered that she has a friend who works for a tree service. She called him and he offered to remove the tree on his day off for a very reasonable rate!

The news reported the next day that our area of town experienced a micro burst. I know our neighbor felt terrible that it was her tree that caused the damage but who could have known a micro burst would hit?!

After the initial shock wore off and we had handled the practical matter of removing the tree, we had fairly minimal damage and the cost to repair was less than our deductible, so we didn't even have to put in an insurance claim. We felt very blessed that it wasn't worse. The boys sleep in a room that faces that side of the house and the tree scraped the window as it fell but the window did not break or harm them - blessed!
