Westyn Turns 3

On Tuesday, January 27, Westyn turned 3!

His birthday started of with the yearly tradition of Justin taking the birthday boy out for a special breakfast before work. They went to a donut shop and Westyn picked a special sprinkle donut.

After dinner, we celebrated with a blue birthday cake. He insisted on having a blue cake because that is his favorite color.

Apparently, I didn't take any pictures of him opening his gifts. But he had a fun birthday and I can't believe he is 3 already!

Garytt Gets Glasses

Towards the end of the school year last year Garytt had a vision screening at school. His report showed he was borderline for astigmatism. Being that he wasn't on our vision insurance yet, I called the screening company to get more information. I definitely wanted to take him in as soon as possible if he was having trouble seeing but if they thought it could wait until January when we could get him on the vision insurance, that would be good. After speaking with them, they said they thought it would be fine to wait until January.

So, I made an appointment with my eye doctor for early January. I have to admit that these pictures are not up to my normal standards but I really thought we would just be in and out and it wouldn't even be a blog worthy experience...boy, was I surprised!

They started by showing him letters on the screen. He got a few wrong but I just thought he was nervous and didn't want to do his letters. After encouraging him and telling him it was no big deal just tell us what he was seeing, the tech looked at me and whispered, "I don't think he can see them." What?!

They switched to images. He called a Christmas tree a triangle and a stick figure of a person the letter A...wow, poor little guy really can't see!

The eye doctor said Garytt has a pretty strong astigmatism and, obviously, would need glasses to correct it. They had a pretty limited selection of glasses in the office (and at pretty high prices). So, we headed out on the adventure of finding and trying on glasses.

After all the searching, we ended up getting two pairs from Sam's Club. (We definitely need a back up pair since he is a 4 year old boy!) We placed the order and two weeks later they arrived.

He was so cute when he put them on. Since all the glasses he tried on just had plain glass, I don't think he realized that when his real glasses came in the world would look so different. He put them on and looked at the floor and said, "Wow, that's a huge crack!" Hahaha...no, buddy, you can just see it now.

Here he is right after getting his first new pair of glasses. He looks so handsome and grown up in them!

He was really funny the first week or so after getting glasses. He hesitated to jump out of the van like normal since his vision was different. He also spent a good amount of time looking at something, then lifting his glasses up, putting them back down and giggling.

Overall, he has really adjusted well to wearing glasses!

Happy New Year 2015

We celebrated the New Year with our annual St. Basil's Day jello cake. We have done this for several years now and it's a tradition the boys really enjoy. They are getting better each year about cutting out the jello "jewels."

Even Justin looks pretty proud of his jewel cutting ability.

Once all the jewels were cut, the boys were eager to watch us pour in the filling.

Apparently, I didn't take a picture of the finished product, but we did get a video of cutting the first piece. The boys were pretty excited about their jiggly cake.

Yum!

Sometimes it ends up with messy hands when you decide that coloring hands is more fun than paper...

The boys enjoyed a treat from Justin's office.

I caught Garytt trying to kiss his own cheek. I asked him about it and he said he had an owie on his cheek. So, like any good mother, I asked him to repeat it on camera...ha!

Then Westyn wanted to be on camera...I warn you, it is a food filled mouth!

And that wraps up our 2014....finally! Bring on 2015!
