As always, the first thing we did was undress him and take him over to the scale to check his weight.
Walking to scales
Checking Westyn's weight
Westyn weighed 7 lb 12 oz at the doctor's office. So that means that he lost 9 oz from his birth weight, which is about 6.7%. This is well within the normal amount of weight loss. I will be curious to see how much he has gained back when we go in for our 2 week check-up.
Then it was time wait for the doctor to come in.
Once the doctor came in, we had to uncover Westyn for the exam. He didn't love being out in the cold!
When Dr. McKenzie was done with his exam, he kindly posed with Westyn. However, Justin apparently didn't get the idea of having the doctor in the shot...so he just focused in on Westyn...
I was a little concerned about Westyn's color, as he had a bit of jaundice when we left the hospital. With Garytt's history of severe enough jaundice that required phototherapy, I am probably more sensitive than many parents. Dr. McKenzie ordered a bilirubin level check right there in the office to be sure that he was still within an acceptable range. Unfortunatley, that meant that Westyn had to have a heel prick. But 10 short minutes later, we were reassured that, although his levels were slightly higher than when he left the hospital, they were indeed well within the normal limits.
On a sidenote, my bloodtype makes my children at a higher risk of having jaundice...that would have been nice to know last time...poor Garytt had a lot of factors working against him between being premature and my bloodtype being a problem.
Anyhow, we had a successful first doctor's visit with Westyn. I hope the appointment goes as well next week!
